AI-assisted WordPress editing

AI Instructions, MCP Permissions, and WordPress Structural Rules

Instructions guide the model, permissions restrict its available operations, and structural rules check the resulting page. Each addresses a different part of the editing process.

The distinction Use instructions to explain the task and authenticated MCP access to limit what the agent may request. Add WordPress-side structural checks when required sections, editable fields, and insertion areas must remain controlled during human and AI editing.

Three separate checks

What should the AI do, what may it request, and what can be saved?

A permitted editing operation can still produce a page that breaks the agreed structure.

Instructions

Describe the expected result

System instructions, project rules, and examples help the model follow the design requirements. The model interprets them and can still depart from them.

Access permissions

Limit the operations available through MCP

The agent acts on behalf of an authenticated user. The user’s group or role, OAuth permissions, and Composer permissions restrict which operations it may request.

Structural rules

Check the edited page in WordPress

Composer code resolves named fields and permitted insertion areas, protects required sections, and validates the complete managed page. These rules are called a Structure Contract.

Combined use Use all three when the site needs model guidance, restricted access, and enforced page structure.

Comparison

What does each mechanism check?

Structural validation complements model instructions and access permissions. It does not replace either.

What is controlled?Instructions describe the task. Authentication, roles, OAuth permissions, and Composer permissions determine which exposed operations the agent may request.Composer checks editable text and media fields, permitted insertion areas, protected sections, and the validity of the resulting page.

How can shared templates change?Instructions and permissions can be updated. Moving existing pages to a new structure still requires a separate plan.Versioned page blueprints support migration plans that preserve compatible page-specific values, identify conflicts, and produce proposals for review.

Choose the checks the editing process requires

Add structural rules

When required sections must remain intact

  • Clients and AI agents edit pages after handoff, while required sections and their order need protection.
  • The agency needs stable, named fields and defined insertion areas so the AI does not have to guess which Gutenberg block to change.
  • Shared templates need to change later through reviewed migrations that preserve compatible page-specific values.

Instructions and permissions may suffice

When a fixed page structure is not required

  • AI creates prototypes or drafts that a person fully checks before they enter the managed site.
  • The structure is simple and the main requirement is to restrict the agent’s available operations.
  • Human editors intentionally have full control over the layout.

Practical questions

How the checks work together

Do structural rules replace MCP permissions?

No. Access checks determine whether the authenticated user’s group or role, OAuth permissions, and Composer permissions allow an operation. Structural checks then determine whether the requested change complies with the page’s rules.

Why not put every design rule in the system instructions?

The model benefits from those instructions. Composer adds an independent check: its code locates the declared field or insertion area and validates the whole result before WordPress accepts it.

Does this apply only to AI editing?

No. For managed pages, structural rules also apply through supported Gutenberg editing controls. Clients can edit the allowed content while required sections remain protected.

What do synced patterns and page-specific values add?

Synced patterns define shared structure; individual pages supply their own text, images, and other permitted values. When the blueprint changes, a migration plan can preserve compatible values and flag conflicts. The resulting proposals require human review before publication.
